Although I was overall happy with what iphone had before I jailbroke it, there was always this itch that I am missing something by not jailbreaking it. I consider my self a power user when it comes to gadgets and I knew I was missing out a lot. I was right. But I have to accept it that was not 'the' reason I jail broke. Having to move to India in about 3 weeks the last thing I wanted was to use a locked iPhone as an 'ipod touch'. With the 3G unlock released by the iphone dev team (these guys are greaaat!!!) I could finally breathe a sigh of relief. So the first step towards unlocking was to jailbreak it and here I am.
Jailbreak Experience
I have to say, the process of jailbreaking is better documented than most of the commercial software I have seen (and written ;)). There are about a million tutorials and videos on youtube most of them uploaded by 7 year olds. Again, they have done an amazing job. Trying to be as cautious as possible while jaibreaking it I googled around a lot to find the best tutorials and chose these--

My iphone 3g was firmware 2.1. The steps were simple--
Update the firmware to 2.2 using iTunes.
Downloaded the QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows.
Follow the steps in the tutorial above!
Of course I am not gonna create another tutorial :P
So far...
I have installed these apps thru Cydia--
Cycorder -- Video recorder for iphone
SpoofApp -- Spoof caller ID, record calls etc. (Gotta pay for it tho, so wont be on my phone for long ;))
Winterboard -- THE BEST. Finally, themes on my iphone.
BossPrefs -- Bunch of quick utils.
Todo:
- There seems to be a whole bunch of exciting 'power-user' type utilities (terminal, openSSH etc) on cydia and installer. Planning to try them out soon.
- Try my hand at writing some programs for iPhone if I find some time.
- See if I can build a catalog of winterboard themes with screenshots.
Hopefully more to come...
